“Art is the proper task of life.” Friedrich Nietzsche.
If so, why do many people give up their talents, preferring a “normal” profession to the one of an artist? Even though the stereotypes of half-mad starving painters and musicians are not quite so common nowadays as they were used to be, one has to have determination, will and confidence in one’s skills to opt for the artistic future.
My name is Tatevik, and I am a third-year AUBG student with freshly declared double major in Business Administration and Journalism. It took me a great deal of time, thinking and planning to select a field of my studies. I can force myself to be good in many things, sometimes subjects I am not even interested in. However, there are activities that can capture all of me: reading, crafting, and especially drawing. I have been drawing as far as I remember myself. Nevertheless, despite my great passion for fine arts, I have never seriously thought of becoming a professional artist. There were numerous reasons that made me chose a business school such as AUBG over an Art College. But all the same, I never stop questioning the rightness of my decision.
I believe that there are other people with the same doubts and concerns. Therefore, I want to learn and share the stories of people who had to choose between creative and non-artistic professions. Every week this blog will be updated with a post featuring a person with a talent in fine arts, music or other form of creative self-expression. I will try to find out the reasons, which made them turn down, or on the contrary, indulge their passions for arts, within the framework of my Multimedia Journalism Class.
Most of the interviewees will belong to the AUBG community; nonetheless I will do my best to bring in some variety. I hope that by the end of my investigation I will not only get to know 15 talented and skillful personalities and sort out my own feelings, but also provide some entertaining reading.
